Camp America was a very last minute decision for me but is still the best decision I have ever made.
Deciding to apply to do Camp America was a very last minute decision for me but is still the best decision I have ever made. I had just finished high school the year before and was accepted into university for two completely different courses. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and ended up deciding to take a gap year and do Camp America so in January 2015 I applied and by March I was placed at a special needs camp called Sunnyhill Adventures in Dittmer, Missouri.
I had no idea what I was getting myself in for, I was fresh out of school, had never worked with special needs before and didn’t even know where Missouri was. I arrived at camp and before I knew it we were working our first day as counsellors and then I blinked and it was over. My first year at camp was so much fun, Thursday nights are always saved for mud fights and what’s a Sunday without a camp fire?
I got the opportunity to work with the most beautiful people who always had a smile on their face and watching them throw themselves into everything at camp was so inspiring. There were days that were harder than others and days that really tested me but no matter what every day was a great day at camp.
My gap year turned into two and I headed back to Missouri for my second summer at camp in 2016 and I’m now counting down the days until I head back there for a third time!
Camp America is the best thing I have ever done! I met some of my best friends at camp and learnt a lot about myself! Bring on 2017 (54 days!!!)
