Start Your Gap Year in the USA, with the Camp America Program!
Taking a gap year between high school and university? Looking to take a break in your higher education and experience things that you would never find in a classroom? If so, Camp America might be the perfect place for you to start!
Camp America is a nine-week summer program that sends Australian students (usually between the ages of 18 and 26) to America for a life-changing cultural exchange program. While in the USA, you will work at one of the many, many summer camps with which our program partners. You will have opportunities to make new friends from all over the world, mentor young kids and teens and get a new outlook on life.
Through Camp America, you will also have an opportunity to experience the United States and the vibrant culture of North America. We have camps located all throughout the USA, so our students have had the chance to experience different parts of the country in the past. We maintain that Camp America is really the best way for a young person from Australia to explore and experience the United States, because it allows you to do so as more than a tourist.
Starting Your Gap Year in America
While the Camp America cultural exchange itself is only a summer program, many of our students use the program as a springboard for gap years in the USA. Through Camp America, students receive a J-1 visa to spend time in the United States. These visas have a built-in 30-day grace period, which means that once camp ends you will still have a month to travel around America as you see fit. Even if you aren't interested in taking a year off of university for a gap year in America, you can take advantage of this travel period and use it as an opportunity to see the world. After all, if you're in the United States, you might as well venture beyond the boundaries of camp!
If you are interested in taking a USA gap year, however, you can extend your J-1 visa with an addition B-1 or B-2 tourist visa. Such an extension will give you the freedom to stay in the United States for up to a year. So while you'll start your gap year working at a summer camp, you will still have 40+ weeks afterwards to see the cities or wide-open spaces of America. From the Grand Canyon to the Empire State Building, from Hollywood and Disneyworld to the Great Lakes and the Sleeping Bear Dunes, your gap year in the USA will give you ample time to visit places you will never forget.
Camp America is even partnered with Intrepid Travel to provide memorable and affordable travel experiences in the United States!
