With 120 years of camping history, YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha offers a dynamic combination of wilderness adventure experiences and traditional camp activities for boys on beautiful Torch Lake in Northern Michigan. Sessions are 2 and 4 weeks long where campers will experience adventure and fun in beautiful, unplugged surroundings while developing lifelong friendships and memories. Staff will lead the campers on challenging, off site, wilderness adventure trips appropriate for each age level such as hiking, canoeing, and sailing in beautiful locations in Northern Michigan and Southern Canada. Traditional on-site activities include sailing, archery, crafts, canoeing, swimming, climbing, ropes course as well as sports, campfires, skits and singing.
Each staff member has a 24 hour period off each week with an additional day off between sessions. Additional downtime is scheduled around programming most evenings.
We emphasize and follow the four core values of the YMCA being Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility in all our programs. Counselors must have a demonstrated experience working with youth. Potential staff must show maturity, have an adventurous spirit while having a commitment to safety. Because we are a wilderness adventure program, preference will be given to those candidates with outdoor skills, and experience backpacking, canoeing, sailing, and SCUBA diving. Kitchen staff must have recent experience working in a deli or restaurant.
